Run

Perhaps we have covered ourselves with so much religious, social and political veneer that we have stripped ourselves of our most ancient and self-protective instincts!
On a recent trip to Costa Rica, I hiked a 5-mile trail up to the Arenal Volcano rim. All that way, I passed signs posted along the road, in Spanish and English, saying “If Volcano erupts, RUN AWAY”. I thought those signs were a joke. Not so, said my guide. The signs were posted after the most recent eruptions during which many local villagers dropped to their knees to pray instead of running from the spewing lava.
I created this work by discharging dyed fabric directly on the snow with metal letters as resist.
