Distant Geysers
40”h x 42”w x 7”d
This work represents my mingling and re-framing of a recent scientific discovery with a Greek mythological story. The scientists of the Cassini mission discovered images of forceful geysers, fueled by hot liquid reservoirs, on the frozen surface of Saturn’s moon. The moon’s name, Enceladus, comes from Greek mythology where he was one of Gaia’s children fertilized by the by the blood of Ouranos.
This art quilt was created within the dichotomous process of hot liquids on a snow bank, reflecting on the dichotomy of fiery geysers surging from beneath an icy surface. I first dyed white cloth, applied soy wax and then discharged it on a snow bank. The piece was further appliquéd, layered and stitched. The convex shaping is meant to expand an appreciation of this alien panorama.
