Watching geologists drill core samples in Colorado’s Piceance Creek Basin in search of oil shale deposits, I was struck by the marriage of encapsulated vibrant hues and textures of our Earth’s layers with the striking prehistoric record that it held.
This convex triptych was created with multilayered appliquéd and pieced cloth – first, variously discharged, rusted, dyed, painted, and burned – then overlaid and stitched with sheer holographic organza.
